It's not the job of mplayer to detect broken software.
It's job of the FAQ to state that gcc 2.96 is known to have caused
problems and that people are advised not to use it. And then ship with
a BUGS file that says "report bugs to ... BUT DO NOT REPORT A BUG IF YOU
USE GCC 2.96".
End of story. You won't get rid of the lusers with your checks, and
people like Guillaume will continue to waste your time instead of
installing gcc 3.0.1 (which would have wasted far less of his own time
than this useless discussion here, by the way).
There are no technical solutions to social problems (like that the
average person is pretty stupid). Get used to it and stop answering the
bug reports on the mailing list if it bothers you.
