[MPlayer-users] problem converting mpg=>avi

hi,

i'm converting some mpg files to avi,
with something like:
mencoder 
-oac mp3lame -lameopts abr:br=64
-ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vhq:vpass=1/2:vbitrate=800
in.avi -o out.avi

the problem is that the resulting avi files are unsynced.

when playing them back i need to specify approximately -delay_0.3 to get
a perfect audio/video sync.

any ideas what's causing this?
