There is no way for mencoder to know if you wanted to use frameno.avi,
or not. The only difference between two-pass and three-pass is that the
latter creates a frameno.avi file.

I see.


That message needs to be there for people that want to use it. Everyone
else should just ignore it.

OK, perhaps your explanation could be next to the text with the error message then?
