My apologies for asking this non Mplayer question. I should have said from the 
outset that it was in desperation because the Macromedia site was no help on 
this point and my first thought was that people on this list are very 
experienced with lots of different video files and getting them to play on 
all sorts of systems. FWIW I managed to get it to run. I mounted the ISO9660 
filesystem and the data track on the CD was this:

.  ..  Autorun.inf  READ ME Windows.txt  almanac2004.exe  dor2003.ico

I then cheated and ran the .exe file in wine and it worked. The right thing to 
do would have been as suggested above to strip out the executable parts that 
are some sort of built in player I am informed. Such a task is beyond my very 
limited knowledge.
