It almost seems like my system is not configured to play wmv with mplayer/mplayerplug-in. I tried epiphany browser and mpg and mov play fine in the plugin but wmv opens in totem.

Sounds like a misconfigured webserver. Many sites for some reason have
wmv to have a mimetype of text/plain and when it is set that way
mplayerplug-in is never called and then firefox calls the extension
handler. You can use wget to get the url in question and it will tell
you what mimetype the webserver is reporting. Firefox seems to ignore
the extensions that the plugins register. I have opened a bug with them
about this, but the Firefox team claims that there is no problem.

You can view the registered plugins/mimetypes on your system by opening
the location of "about:plugins" in Firefox.

Also note that the mplayerplug-in.types file is only used when the
use-mimetypes option is set to 1 (which for 99% of the people you don't
want this set). See the mplayerplug-in.sf.net website for more
configuration information.

Well I think I see what you are talking about. The files that crash have an extension of wmv. When I look at the properties of the file however it says the mime type is video/x-ms-asf.

Is this my problem?
