Lots of codecs don't like being crammed into an AVI. I assume real would be among them.

Well, it was worth a shot. Worst case, they try it out and it doesn't work. No big loss.

That might work. I don't know much about matroska.

I just checked out the compatible codec listings in OGMMerge and MKVMerge. OGM (very stingy) shows no love for RealMedia, and shuns it completely. Matroska, however, is very open, and is compatible with both Real Audio and Real Video (or so it claims).

I have several Matroska files that contain Real video and audio.
