If I type
mplayer -vo help
it gives me the following options for video_out devices:
Available video output drivers:
fbdev Framebuffer Device
fbdev2 Framebuffer Device
cvidix console VIDIX
null Null video output
mpegpes Mpeg-PES to DVB card
yuv4mpeg yuv4mpeg output for mjpegtools
tga Targa output
pnm PPM/PGM/PGMYUV file
md5sum md5sum of each frame

Which Thinkpad are you using?

Where are you typing this command in at? If you are in an xterm, then it will fail because you don't have any X compatible outputs. You need some like these: xv, x11

If you are in an X-term, then trying dropping to a text console and starting MPlayer.

Did you compile MPlayer or did you install a precompiled version?
