[Update] This worked, but the final file size/bitrate was slightly 
higher than requested.  Now I just need to establish whether the 
three-stage method I am using (+ your suggestions) gives measurably 
higher quality than live capture at the final rate (with hq and qmin/qmax).

Are there any useful test files for this purpose?
