I'd certainly support removing/deprecating mpeg. I've been fighting transcode for two days trying to get my divx->DVD conversions working, until I realized that the mpeg module was outputting something strange that crashed mplayer/xine/my standalone DVD player with every output file. I switched to ffmpeg and everything's great.

mpeg sucks. It's neither fast nore good quality.

Actually it isn't/wasn't that bad, but it's plain old. It hasn't been
maintained for years, so it can't be as good as the others...

Personally I'd like to have the "mpeg" module removed from transcode for
this reason.
