Correct decision. ffmpeg (or rather ffmpeg's libavcodec) is mplayer's
default for decoding MPEG-4. XviD creates MPEG-4 format, so it's the
obvious choice.

??? I really don't understand you. Where's the problem?
libavcodec is a great decoder, and completely capable of decoding XviD.

XviD is the nicest codec in the whole world. But maybe I simply don't
understand your problem. What exactly doesn't work?

Btw, you can set the decoder for mplayer using the -vc option. mplayer's
default is ffmpeg, and that's fine. If you insist on decoding with xvid,
use -vc xvid, and for divx4linux use -vc divx4, or -vc odivx and so on.
