This ioctl is used to set 16 bit recording (as opposed to 8 bits).
I cannot imagine the driver of your soundcard doesn't support this. Is
there anything interesting in the output of dmesg?
You actually reminded me of something... I've constantly been getting these messages in my syslog since I first installed the card and loaded the drivers.
cx8800[0]: AUD_STATUS: 0xfff4 [stereo/pilot c1] ctl=BTSC_AUTO_STEREO
Mind you, I get this even when the card isn't in use. I've never worried about it since it's never affected my recording with streamer.
This makes me suspect you're trying to record from the cx88 card (is
that possible nowadays?) instead of your soundcard... Try /dev/dsp1
instead of /dev/dsp0 or v.v.
